Back in July I gave a talk during Big Design’s Gaming track on… what else, but one of the hottest UX topics around: Gamification. This was kind of a Gamification 101, to get everyone tuned into what’s going on, what people are doing with it, where you can learn more, etc… With over 150 slides of Gamification goodness – you got a good high-level view – and I’m giving the 101 again – with some updated tweaks at this month’s Refresh Dallas.
Gamification has entered the Gartner’s Hype Cycle for 2011, where it’s entering its peak for expectations – expectations for what Gamification can be, and what it can do. It’s in good company, placed around group buying and activity streams. It’s time to start looking into gamification if you haven’t already.
When talking about Gamification in regards to UX/UI Design there are two sides: the surface UI view of Gamification – where you add elements to your project to make them more game like, but without the underlying understanding of “why” an element may or may not work. Then there is the very deep psychology understanding of what makes us tick. Why we do what we do, and how to effect us to do something different. You can do one without the other, but you’ll end up with something that fades quickly.
